Aug 29, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State cross country team begins the 2013 campaign Saturday at Cal State Fullerton's Mark Covert Classic in Brea, Calif.
The women's 5K invitational race will start at 9:15 a.m. PT and follows the men's invitational 8K, which is set for an 8:40 a.m. PT start. The Mark Covert Classic is also holding a men's open 8K (8 a.m. PT) and a women's open 5K (9:40 a.m. PT). The meet will be held at Carbon Canyon Park (4442 Carbon Canyon Regional Park).
Formerly the Fullerton Season Opener, it was renamed the Mark Covert Classic in 2012 in honor of the 1970 Division II champion and Cal State Fullerton alum. The course consists of multiple loops alternating between a 1K grass inner loop in the main section of the park and a dirt trail nature loop.
The Aztecs and host Titans will be joined by squads from USC, Long Beach State, San Diego, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Bakersfield and Pomona-Pitzer, among others.
This year's SDSU team features 15 runners, including four of San Diego State's top-six finishers at the 2012 NCAA West Regionals.
Sophomore Laura Vazquez was the team's top runner twice in 2012 and in the top four in all seven races. Classmate Chelsea Kruthers was in the team's top five in all but one race last year, while sophomores Rachel Roesgen and Jessica McCall were also regulars in the Aztec top five.
Results for the Mark Covert Classic will be posted on Flashwest.com and later on GoAztecs.com.
San Diego State returns to action the following Saturday (Sept. 7) at the adidas/UCI Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
