May 21, 2013
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State water polo goalkeeper Rachel Mitchell has been selected to represent the United States at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 17-30. The soon-to-be sophomore is the lone keeper on the 13-player roster.
Mitchell is the third Aztec to be invited to play during the offseason, following in the footsteps of Amber Pezzolla and Taelor Moreno, who were chosen to participate in the USA Water Polo Senior National Team and Junior National Team camps, respectively.
A product of Danville, Calif., Mitchell recently completed the finest true freshman season for a goalkeeper in program history. Mitchell played in 33 of 34 games and recorded 368 saves, the third-most in Aztec single-season history and most by a first-year SDSU player ever. She also posted a goals-against average of 7.60 and logged 14 assists and 11 steals.
SDSU is coming off its eighth-straight year of 20 or more victories after posting a 23-11 record. The 23 wins are its most since 2009 when San Diego State turned in an identical record. The Aztecs were also ranked in the top-8 nationally the entire regular season, twice rose to as high as No. 6 and finished campaign ranked 10th. The Scarlet and Black have finished in the top-11 every year of their existence on Montezuma Mesa, which spans 19 years.
