Aztecs Set for UCI Invitational After Two-Week Break

SAN DIEGO - Still treading water in the No. 7 position, the San Diego State women's water polo team (8-3) will resume play this weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational after two weeks off. The team is scheduled to play a pair of doubleheaders on Feb. 23 and 24.
First up on Saturday for the Aztecs will be No. 13 UC Santa Barbara at 10:15 a.m. PT. Depending on the outcome, SDSU will face either No. 2 USC or No. 18 Pacific at 2 p.m. or 3:15 p.m. PT. The invitational will conclude on Feb. 24 with another two opponents at a time to be determined.
The Aztecs scored a total of 27 goals at the Triton Invitational and were led by Amber Pezzolla's seven, which gave her 29 goals on the season. The weekend's second-leading scorer was Anique Herman, who scored five times bringing her season total to 17. Rachel Mitchell was in the net for the Aztecs all weekend and now has 153 saves on the year.
San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara are no strangers, facing each other 25 times in the last 13 seasons with the Aztecs owning a the series record of 21-4. The last outing for San Diego State and UCSB was at the 2011 UCSB Invitational where the Aztecs defeated the Gauchos, 13-9, on Jan. 29, 2011. At the time, SDSU was ranked No. 11 and UCSB ranked No. 12.
Following the UC Irvine Invitational, the Aztecs will bring it back to Aztec Aquaplex and play No. 6 UC Irvine for the second time this season on March 2 at 1 p.m. PT.
