Feb. 10, 2009

WOODLAND, Calif. - Senior utility Anna Gonzales (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) has been named the co-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Gonzales had one of the more dominating weeks in MPSF water polo history as she scored 22 goals in six games last week to lead the Aztecs to a 6-0 record and a second-consecutive UCSD Triton Invitational championship.

In the season opener on Thursday, Gonzales recorded a game-high six tallies in the win over No. 14 Hartwick College. Her six-goal effort ranks third in the SDSU single-game record books. She also added one steal and one assist to lead the Scarlet and Black to its eight consecutive opening-day victory.

On Friday, Gonzales once again led all Aztec scorers with three goals in the Aztecs 12-3 defeat of Marist.

At the two-day UCSD Triton Invitational, Gonzales amassed a team-high 13 goals over four games. She had hat-trick performances against No. 12 UC Irvine in pool play, No. 8 Michigan in the semifinals and against No. 9 UC Davis in the finals. In the championship match against the Aggies, Gonzales scored three straight scores in the first quarter to give the Aztecs a 4-1 lead. San Diego State would never let go of their lead as they would go on to win the UCSD Triton Invitational, 12-8, for the second year in a row.

With her efforts during the week, Gonzales is steadily moving up the SDSU all-time charts. Gonzales currently ranks fourth on the school's all-time charts with 205 career goals and is 15 away from tying for the third spot. She also ranks No. 5 on the career assists list with 107. In addition, she currently sits in eighth place in the record book with 139 career steals and is in ninth place with 89 career ejections drawn.

This is the second career weekly award for Gonzales, who shares the honor with USC senior Michelle Stein. Gonzales claimed the same honor almost a year ago (Feb. 12, 2008) when she scored 14 goals in the season-opening week to lead the Aztecs to a 5-0 record and their first-ever UCSD Triton Invitational championship.

San Diego State will look to continue its perfect start to the 2009 season when the Aztecs head to Los Angeles to take on third-ranked UCLA. The match is set for Friday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m.
