No. 7 Water Polo to Play Doubleheader at Lancer Mini Invite
Jan. 31, 2013
SAN DIEGO - The No. 7 San Diego State women's water polo team will dive into a doubleheader this Saturday, Feb. 2, against Cal State San Bernardino and CSU Bakersfield at the Lancer Mini Invite in Riverside, Calif. The Aztecs will start against CSUSB at 12 p.m. PT followed by CSUB at 4:30 p.m. PT. SDSU returns to its regular-season schedule after dropping a 14-13 overtime decision to the San Diego State water polo alumni during a festivity-filled Saturday. Prior to that, the Aztecs opened their campaign at the Michigan Kick-Off where they beat No. 9 San Jose State, No. 14 Indiana and No. 11 Michigan, which required sudden-victory overtime. Their lone misstep was a 12-8 setback to No. 3 UCLA in the opener.
Defensively, Rachel Mitchell leads the Aztec defense while playing goalkeeper. The true freshman started all four games in Ann Arbor and made 62 saves, including a career-best 19 at Michigan. Sitting at 3-1 heading into the weekend, San Diego State is the lone Big West Conference school with three wins over nationally ranked foes and carries a No. 7 national ranking for a third straight week. In its previous 18 years as a varsity sport, San Diego State has never faced Cal State San Bernardino in women's water polo and will do so for the first time this weekend at the Lancer Mini Invite. CSU Bakersfield, however, is a different story as the Aztecs have claimed all 10 decisions vs. the Roadrunners. For SDSU and CSUB, which is receiving votes in this week's top-20 poll, this is their first meeting since the 2010 Aztec Invitational, which San Diego State won, 9-3. Following the Lancer Mini Invite this weekend, San Diego State will return to Aztec Aquaplex and play host to Hartwick on Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. PT. |
