SDSU Water Polo Falls to No. 2 USC, 9-5, in MPSF Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif. - Second-ranked USC jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and never looked back en route to a 9-5 victory over No. 13 San Diego State in quarterfinal action of the MPSF Tournament in Berkeley, Calif., on Friday afternoon. The 10th-seeded Aztecs (15-17) will now face sixth-seeded California (16-10) at the Spieker Aquatic Complex at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

The defending national champion Trojans (22-3) added two more goals in the second period to take a 5-1 lead into intermission. USC outscored SDSU, 3-2, in the third and added one more goal in the fourth quarter.

Stacy Werner had three goals, and Elana Cervantes and Savanah Kelley each scored a goal for the Aztecs. Sarah Kilgore played all 28 minutes and made eight saves in net.

The Aztecs' match against the Golden Bears will be their second meeting of the season. On Feb. 25 at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational, California won, 10-9, in triple overtime.
