Complete Release and Season Statistics AZTECS ON THE ROAD FOR MATCHES AT UTAH STATE & BOISE STATE THIS WEEK
San Diego State is back on the road this week for a pair of Mountain West Conference matches. On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Aztecs will be in Logan, Utah, for a contest against league foe Utah State at 7:00 p.m. (MT) in the Virginia Street Gym. Two days later (Saturday, Oct. 26), SDSU will visit Idaho for a match against Boise State at 7:00 p.m. (MT) in Bronco Gym.
San Diego State holds 7-3 lead in its series with Utah State since the teams first met in 1978. More recently, the Aztecs fell to the Aggies on a neutral court in 2010 and defeated them at home last season. The Aztecs are 4-0 vs. the USU in San Diego, 1-0 in Logan and 2-3 on neutral courts.
The Aztecs and Boise State have met just five times previously with SDSU winning on four of those five occasions. Last season the teams split matches with the Broncos winning in Boise and SDSU winning in San Diego. The first meeting between the teams occurred at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas, during the 2005 season with SDSU taking a three-set win. The Aztecs won both meetings with the Broncos in 2011.
Senior outside hitter Raegan Shelton made her return from a prolonged spell on the sidelines due to injury when she appeared in the final set against Wyoming last Thursday (Oct. 17), registering a kill and three digs. She made her full return as a starter in the ensuing contest vs. Colorado state (Oct. 19). In that match she led the Aztecs with 11 kills and also had a block and three digs. A preseason all-conference selection, Shelton has been out since suffering a broken finger during the NAU Fiesta Bowl Tournament (Sept. 6-7).
SANDBERG COMING ON
Kaja Sandberg recorded a career-high eight block assists for the second time in three matches when she did so vs. Colorado State last Saturday (Oct. 19). Over the past three matches she has average 1.67 blocks per set. She leads the team in that category this season with a mark of 1.15 bps. She has also registered nine kills in each of those most recent three outings.
NASH LEADS THE OFFENSE
After missing both of the Aztecs' matches during the week of Oct. 7-12 (at New Mexico and at Air Force) due to injury, senior Summer Nash returned for last week's two contests. She notched 10 kills, three blocks and five digs in her return vs. Wyoming on Oct.17. She leads the team in kills at 3.45 per set and in points at 3.97 per set. Nash has recorded three block assists in each of her last four matches.
Chaiymin Steel hit double figures in kills for the fourth straight match with 12 against Wyoming last Thursday (Oct. 17). She also had three blocks, two digs and a service ace in that contest. Her string of double-figure kill efforts end in the next match when she recorded seven vs. Colorado State on Oct. 19.
FOUCH MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Setter Johnna Fouch's three-plus year mark of 4,188 assists places her third on the SDSU career list. The top spot is held Andrea Clark (1994-97) with 4,916. Fouch ranks ninth on the Mountain West career assist list and needs three assists to move into the No. 8 spot. Her 42 career double-doubles is the most among active players in the Mountain West and is fourth on the all-time conference list.
The Aztecs have been involved in five five-set matches this season and have a mark of 1-4 in those contests. Last year they went 7-3 in five-set contests ... As a team, San Diego State ranks 29th in the nation in assists (13.14 per set) and 25th in kills (13.99 per set) ... Halle Aiken had career highs of 10 kills, 12.0 points and a .500 hitting percentage in the match at Air Force on Oct. 12 ... Setter Chloe Mathis notched her first double-double of the season with 22 assists and 10 digs against Colorado State last Saturday (Oct. 19) ... Christie Ring had her second double-figure dig effort of the season with 11 against Wyoming last Thursday (Oct. 12) ...Three players have started all 16 matches for the Aztecs this fall: Johnna Fouch, Emily Harris and Chaiymin Steel.
San Diego State returns home next week for a pair of Mountain West Conference contests. On Thursday, Oct. 31, the Aztecs will host Air Force for a 7:00 p.m. match on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym. Two days later (Saturday, Nov. 2), SDSU face New Mexico in a match scheduled for a noon start on Aztec Court. Both of those contests will be shown with live streaming video on the SDSU web site.
