COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State outside hitter Raegan Shelton has earned Mountain West Volleyball Co-Player of the Week honors for matches played from Oct. 3-9, 2011. It is the first weekly honor for Shelton, who shared the award with Wyoming outside hitter Jodi Purdy.
Shelton, a 6-0 sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, led the Aztecs to a 2-0 record last week, jumping from fifth to second place in the Conference standings. San Diego State (10-5, 3-2 MW) picked up two big 3-2 road wins at TCU on Thursday night and at New Mexico on Sunday afternoon.
Shelton had a career-high 21 kills and 58 attempts on .241 hitting against the Horned Frogs, the most kills by an Aztec this season. In the fifth set, she had three kills late in the fifth set that allowed SDSU to maintain their lead for the match win. Against New Mexico on Sunday, Shelton had 19 kills on .267 hitting and tied her career-high with eight digs. In the fifth set, Shelton tied the set at 15 with a kill, then got the kill on the next point to take the lead 16-15.
For the week, Shelton averaged 4.00 kills, 0.40 blocks and 1.50 digs per set, while hitting .252. She averaged 4.20 points per set over 10 total sets.
San Diego State will be at home this week for a pair of Mountain West matches that begin with a contest against Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7:00 p.m. (PT) on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym.
