Pencil Earns Finals Berth, Places Fourth in 200 at Canadian Trials

July 6, 2008

WINDSOR, Canada - After qualifying for the finals of the 200-meter dash early Sunday morning, Sherraine Pencil returned to the track in the afternoon and finished in fourth place at the 2008 Canadian Trials. Pencil, who also placed fourth in the 400 on Saturday, narrowly missed a roster spot for the 2008 Olympics.

In the preliminary round, Pencil was the first to cross the finish line in Heat 4 after running 23.93 seconds, which was the fourth-fastest mark in the field, to earn an automatic ticket to the finals.

Later in the day, the top four runners in the preliminaries were all slated to compete in Section 2 of the finals and all four spots held true as Adrienne Power (23.09), Esther Akinsulie (23.45) and Amonn Nelson (23.58) finished ahead of Pencil, who ran 23.89, to earn national team roster spots.
