Former Aztec Melinda Smedley Fails to Advance at Olympic Trials

June 28, 2008

EUGENE, Ore. - Former San Diego State track and field athlete Melinda Smedley fell short in her bid to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 100-meter dash on Friday at the 2008 Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Smedley ran the 100 in 11.42 seconds to finish in sixth place in Heat 2 and 28th overall. The top 24 athletes moved on to the quarters and Smedley was 0.06 seconds shy of being a part of the field that advanced.

Stephanie Bagan and SDSU alum Erin Asay will compete in the qualifying round of the pole vault on Thursday, July 3, at 7:10 p.m.
