Karoline Koehler Earns Academic All-America Honors

June 25, 2008

SAN DIEGO - Karoline Koehler, a 2008 indoor All-American in the triple jump, has been named to this year's ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women's track and field/cross country second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Wednesday.

Koehler is the 16th Aztec in school history to earn Academic All-America accolades and the first since 2004 when baseball's Rielly Embrey was voted to the first team. Koehler is also the first track and field/cross country athlete to receive the academic honor in SDSU history. Earlier this month, she was named to the Academic All-District 8 first team by CoSIDA.

A native of Erfurt, Germany, Koehler is studying international economics at San Diego State and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.90.

Earlier this year, Koehler finished in third place with a personal- and school-record leap of 44 feet, 8.25 inches at the NCAA Indoor Championships to garner All-America honors. Prior to the meet, the senior won the High Point Award at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships and was named to the all-league team in three events (triple jump, long jump, 60-meters).

In 2007, Koehler was an NCAA Outdoor Championships participant in the triple jump after finishing third at the NCAA West Regionals, where she also competed in the long jump and 4x100-meter relay. For her efforts at the regional meet, Koehler was named all-West Region by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in the triple jump and 4x100. She also garnered all-conference accolades in the outdoor long jump and 4x100 and indoor recognition in the triple jump.

One of the top horizontal jumpers in program history, Koehler owns the second-best long jump (20-4.50) and triple jump (43-3.75) on SDSU's outdoor performance list. Both marks were achieved in 2007.

Koehler is just one of three MWC athletes to garner Academic All-America recognition. She is joined by Colorado State's April Thomas (first team) and Utah's Lauren Endersen (third team).
