Shanieka Thomas was named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas has been named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced today.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding female and male athletes in the sport of indoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches at each member institution.

Thomas, a St. Andrew, Jamaica, native, finished second in the triple jump at the NCAA Championships last weekend with a mark of 45 feet, 4 ¼ inches (13.82 meters). The leap earned her first-team All-America honors. Thomas led the nation most of the season with her mark of 46-02.50 (14.08m) that came at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Feb. 8. That is the sixth-best indoor mark in NCAA history, third best in a non-NCAA Championship meet, a Mountain West record, a school record and a Don Kirby Elite Invitational record (collegiate or non-collegiate).

Thomas was named the most outstanding performer at the 2013 MW Indoor Championships after she won the triple jump, placed second in the 400 meters and was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team, as the Aztecs won their first-ever MW indoor title.
