Jan. 22, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas has been named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the second career MW weekly honor for the Clarendon, Jamaica, native.
Thomas won the triple jump Saturday at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., with a personal-best mark of 44 feet, 2 ½ inches (13.47 meters). The mark was the best in the country this season and the second best in school history. She defeated 26 other entrants in the event, including the runner-up by 3-02.75.
Thomas also was fourth of 56 in the long jump in 19-02.50 (5.85m), which ranks second in the MW this year and tied for 43rd in the country. She ended the day by running a leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that came in fourth (of 21 teams) in 3:50.26, the fastest time in the MW this season.
Thomas, the runner-up in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last June, and the Aztecs travel to Albuquerque, N.M., again on Feb. 1-2 for the New Mexico Classic.
