Ashley, Roberge Lead T&F on Day 1 of Triton Invite

Whitney Ashley and Moriah Roberge each finished in second place in their respective event to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the first day of the Triton Invitational Friday on the campus of UC San Diego. Both were also the top collegiate finisher in each event.
Ashley took second of 28 entrants in the open discus throw with a heave of 178 feet, 4 inches. Ashley, who has the fourth-best mark in the country of 183-01, which was set last week at the Mt. SAC Relays, was only beaten by unattached competitor Baillie Gibson (181-02).
Roberge, meanwhile, led a host of four Aztec pole vaulters that finished among the top five in the open event. Roberge cleared a season-best mark of 12-02.50 to take second of 12 entrants in an event won by Kimberly Stephenson (12-06.25) of NYAC. Heather Arseneau, Kelsie Jarratt and Rebecca Turnbow all tied for third at 11-08.50.
In the hammer invitational, Ellie Fanaika was 15th of 19 competitors with a toss of 174-02, while Burrell was 21st in 156-09 (No. 9 all-time at SDSU).
San Diego State will be back in action in the two-day meet on Saturday. Kelsy Hintz and Holly Waseloff will kick things off in the Leon T. Roach III Invitational Pole Vault at 11 a.m. PT, while Marianne Hogan closes the meet for the Aztecs in the 5,000-meter run at 6 p.m. PT.
