Feb. 1, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Freshman Nicole Oudenaarden won the long jump to lead the San Diego State track and field team at the New Mexico Classic Friday in Albuquerque, N.M. Oudenaarden, competing in her first-ever collegiate meet, defeated 21 others with a leap of 19 feet, ¾ inches (5.81 meters). It was the eight-best indoor long jump mark in program history. Alex Evans was third (18-06.50/5.65m), while Shanieka Thomas finished fifth (18-05.25/5.62m) in the event. Thomas, who still has the top triple jump mark in the country and will compete in the event tomorrow, also had the fastest 400-meter dash on Friday, clocking a time of 56.85 seconds (the three fastest-seeded sections will race tomorrow). Jasmine Burrell (59-00.75/18.00m) and Ellie Fanaika (55-11.00/17.04m) were fourth and fifth, respectively, out of 22 entrants in the weight throw, but did not PR. Mikayla Howden, meanwhile, was 11th with a toss of 49-11.00 (15.19m), which ranks No. 8 all-time with the Aztecs. Every other SDSU athlete finished among the top 10 on Friday as well, including Deyna Roberson in the 600 (fifth, 1:36.86), Maderia Toatley (sixth, 24.80) and Oudenaarden (ninth, 25.14) in the 200, and Carrington Mahr (sixth, 5-04.25/1.63m) and Karsen Sper (tied-10th, 5-02.25/1.58m) in the high jump.
