Two Aztec Pole Vaulters Record Marks In Their Season-Opening Meet
Jan. 18, 2003
SAN DIEGO - The 2003 San Diego State track and field season officially got underway Saturday as two Aztec pole vaulters recorded marks at the indoor Pole Vault Summit, sponsored by UCS Spirit and USA Track and Field, in Reno, Nev.
SDSU sophomore Beth Vieira (San Diego, Calif.) cleared 10-8, just two inches below her personal best, to finish eighth in the No. 5 College Women's Division. Freshman Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.) placed 10th in the same division as Vieira, vaulting 10-0 in her first collegiate meet. Meyer's mark tied her for 10th in the all-time Aztec indoor pole vault record book.
Sophomore Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) was the only other SDSU vaulter to compete in the meet, but she finished with a no-height in the top women's collegiate division. A year ago, Balentine placed seventh in the same competition.
Three other San Diego State pole vaulters, Marissa Earle (San Diego, Calif.), Jesika Englebretson (Salinas, Calif.), Julie Hudlow (San Diego, Calif.), were in attendance at the two-day summit, but did not compete in the elite field.
The Aztec pole vaulters and the rest of the women's track and field team return to action at the Mountain T's Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday, Feb. 8.
