May 20, 2010
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis player Julia Trunk has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Southwest Region Player to Watch, the governing body of collegiate tennis announced earlier this week. Trunk is one of 12 players in NCAA Division I to be recognized.
The Bad Saulgau, Germany, native is coming off a junior campaign in which she played the entire season at No. 1 singles. Trunk finished her dual-match slate with a 16-9 record, which included three victories over nationally ranked players, and an overall mark of 21-10. The Mountain West Conference all-singles honoree is currently ranked No. 64 in the latest ITA singles poll and earned a national ranking of 50 earlier this year. Two weeks ago, Trunk was selected as an alternate to compete in the NCAA singles tournament.
In doubles, the rising senior played primarily at No. 2 alongside freshman Julia Wais. The duo completed their dual-match season with a record 16-6 and 19-8 overall. The tandem ended the season with a five-match winning streak.
The ITA Player to Watch Award goes to a player who has an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of her career. This award's criteria include a player's sportsmanship and character.
