SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Indra Erichsen has won the 2005 West Region Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The award comes after being named Mountain West Conference player of the week on April 13 and earning her fourth all-MWC doubles honor two weeks ago.
Erichsen, a native of Husum, Germany, finished the 2005 campaign with a singles record of 13-9, playing at Nos. 2-5. In doubles action, she finished with a mark of 16-8 with four different partners. With Nina Spaeth by her side, the two went 10-1, including an impressive 8-1 at the top position. The pair ended the regular season on a six-match winning streak.
Erichsen becomes the second San Diego State player to win the award in three years. Then-senior Katja Karrento won the award in 2003.
According to the ITA, the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship is awarded to a collegiate women's tennis player who displays dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.
The Aztecs are in action this Friday as they face Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The match is slated for a 9 a.m. start at Marks Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern California.
