Sierra Ellison Named MWC Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Sierra Ellison has been named Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. The award is the first her of career.
A native of Coto de Caza, Calif., Ellison won both of her matches last week in SDSU's 5-2 win at nationally ranked UC Irvine. The junior paired with her sister, Roxanne, at No. 1 doubles and were 9-7 winners over UCI's Courtney Byron and Becka Kwan. It was the No. 27 ranked doubles tandem's third straight win during the dual-match season and their sixth overall. In 2010-11, Ellison-Ellison is 13-1.
In singles, Ellison was victorious at No. 4 over Franziska Goettsching in three sets. After dropping the first set, 3-6, the junior stormed back and recorded wins in the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-2, to provide the Aztecs with their fourth team point and the overall team decision. With the win, Ellison improved to 2-0 in the spring and 8-3 overall. Dating back to the fall, Ellison has won four straight singles matches.
Ellison and SDSU return to action Saturday, Feb. 5, when they play host to Washington at Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
