SDSU Earns Five Wins on Day Two of Fall Classic II

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State women's tennis team won three singles matches and two doubles contests on the second day of the SDSU Fall Classic II. Three Aztecs will have a shot at a championship when play wraps on Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center.
In the consolation round of the doubles black draw, both Aztec pairs picked up wins. Laura Antonana Iriarte and Tami Nguyen defeated SMU's Sasha Malyachikova and Heidi Stewart, 8-6. Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar, meanwhile, faced Monica Pezzotti and Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas and picked up an 8-4 victory.
Other Aztecs competing in doubles included Dora Somoracz and Isabelle Hoorn as they faced off with the Kansas pair of Vika Khanevskaya and Anastasia Trubich on Saturday morning in the semifinals of the white draw. The duo was unable to advance though, as they suffered an 8-6 setback. Kristin Buth and Michela Casanova, meanwhile, were unable to advance in the consolation round as they dropped a 9-7 decision to Washington's Grace Ysidora and Capucine Gregoire.
In singles, Tami Nguyen earned a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Capucine Gregoire of Washington in the semifinals of the black draw to advance to a championship match with Washington's Julija Luckac on Sunday. Kristin Buth, meanwhile, dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Luckac in the other semifinal match of the black draw.
San Diego State's nationally ranked singles player, No. 90 Julia Wais, competed in the consolation round of white draw against Maria Jose-Cardona of Kansas and picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Wais will now face Washington's Andjela Nemcevic for the consolation championship on Sunday. Alicia Aguilar faced Nemcevic in the other consolation semifinal, but suffered a 7-6(3), 6-1 setback.
Dora Somoracz picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Utah's Lexi Antista in the gold draw to advance to a consolation championship matchup with Anastasia Trubich of Kansas on Sunday. Isabelle Hoorn, meanwhile, was unable to advance after dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Dylan Windom of Kansas.
Laura Antonana Iriarte battled SMU's Sasha Malyachikova on Saturday in the consolation round of the red draw, but was unable to advance as she dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision. Michela Casanova faced Claire Dreyer of Kansas in the semifinals of the grey draw, but fell just short of advancing as she dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
The final day of the SDSU Fall Classic II is set for 9 a.m. PT on Saturday at Aztec Tennis Center. Doubles will start the day and will be followed by singles action.
