Oct. 23, 2008
SAN DIEGO - Main Draw Singles | Consolation Singles | Doubles Draw
Three Aztecs stayed alive in the singles main draw of the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships as the San Diego State women's tennis team kicked off the five-day event on Thursday at Barnes Tennis Center. Along with the University of San Diego, SDSU is co-hosting the 16-team tournament. The first day got underway with doubles action in the morning. Olivia Colman and Kathryn Kitts jumped out to a quick start as they teamed up to down UCLA's Jordan Heitzner and Brittany Rosen, 8-2. Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov were not as fortunate, however, dropping a narrow 8-6 decision to Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton of Long Beach State. The Aztec duos of Holly Bagshaw/Julia Trunk and Roxanne Ellison/Sierra Ellison, who both received first-round byes, will join Colman/Kitts in the round of 32 when they hit the courts tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. In singles action, SDSU won a total of six matches with Bagshaw, Trunk and Roxanne Ellison all advancing to the round of 32. Trunk defeated Natasha Zorec of Hawai'i, 6-1, 6-1, while Bagshaw, who is seeded 14th in the tournament, downed San Diego's Alexandra Demidova (6-3, 6-3) in their only matches of the day. Ellison, meanwhile, came back from a one-set deficit to edge Arizona State's Ali Van Horne, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, before cruising to a 7-6, 6-3, triumph over Elizabeth Marisco of USC.
In other first-round action, Cadua blanked Pepperdine's Angelia De Miestre, 6-0, 6-0, while Sierra Ellison earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Heitzner of UCLA. Both Cadua and Ellison were unable to get past their second-round opponents, however, and will join Colman and Yusupov in the consolation draw tomorrow. Consolation singles play will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m., with main draw action set to follow at 11 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 24.
