SDSU Finishes Day Two at USTA/ITA Regional Event

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team saw multiple battles on the tennis court during the second day of competition at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional at the Barnes Tennis Center on Friday.
In doubles action, Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais easily dismissed Ali Facey and Sarah Gong of UC Irvine, 8-2. The duo will move onto the quarterfinals on Saturday. Michela Casanova and Isabelle Hoorn were unable to move on, falling to Tara Panu and Abigail Phillips of Pepperdine, 8-3.
In singles play, Aztec senior No. 90 Wais easily dismissed Maria Pistalu of Cal State Northridge in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-1. In the round of 16 Wais would not be as fortunate, succumbing to Robin Anderson of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1.
Laura Antonana Iriarte advanced to the round of 32 after Pamela Montez was forced to withdraw due to illness. In the round of 16, Antonana Iriarte would not reach the quarterfinals after a hard fought match against Lorraine Guillermo (Pepperdine), 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Casanova was unable to get past USC's Kaitlyn Christian in the round of 32, 6-2, 7-5. Also falling in the same round to a Trojan was Kristin Buth, who could not get past Gabi Desimone, 6-1, 6-1.
In consolation singles action, Aguilar battled with Ebba Unden of Long Beach State, eventually coming away victorious, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Aguilar moved onto the fourth round and downed Holly Flemming (UCLA), 6-4, 6-3, to move on to the consolation quarterfinals.
Dora Somoracz saw a bye in the second round of the consolation bracket on her way to face Idil Haciraifoglu (San Diego). The two would fight for each point, with Hacirafioglu ultimately coming out on top, 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.
San Diego State will continue competition at the event on Saturday, resuming play at 8:30 a.m. PT, beginning with doubles action.
