SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State women's tennis team earned eight wins on the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday. SDSU will see four singles players and two doubles teams move on into the round of 32 to be played on Friday.
In doubles action, senior Alicia Aguilar and junior Julia Wais earned a first round bye and will face UC Irvine's Ali Facey and Sarah Gong on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Freshmen Michela Casanova and Isabelle Hoorn, meanwhile, defeated Natalie McKay and Jamie Raney of UC Riverside, 8-3, to advance to a matchup with Pepperdine's Tara Panu and Abigail Phillips in the round of 32 on Friday morning.
Sophomore Laura Antonana Iriarte and freshman Kristin Buth, meanwhile, were unable to advance as they dropped an 8-3 decision to Inge Hendrikx and Kim Stubbe of Arizona. Freshmen Tami Nguyen and Dora Somoracz also suffered an 8-3 setback to Fullerton's Morgan McIntosh and Kalika Slevcove. Both duos will now move on to the consolation bracket.
Wais, San Diego State's lone ranked player at No. 90, had a bye in the first round of singles and then defeated Tori Parravi of Loyola Marymount, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to a matchup in the round of 32 against Maria Pistalu (Cal State Northridge) on Friday in the round of 32.
Casanova, meanwhile, picked up two wins as she defeated Lorraine Cheung of Cal State Northridge in the round of 128, 6-1, 6-4. Casanova then claimed another victory against Erica Cano of UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, 6-3, and now will face USC's Kaitlyn Christian.
Antonana Iriarte also downed two opponents on the day. In the round of 128, she dismissed April Scatliffe of UC Santa Barbara, 6-2, 6-3. In her second singles match of the day, the San Sebastian, Spain, native defeated Arizona State's Joanna Smith, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to a matchup with UCLA's Pamela Montez on Friday morning.
Buth saw a bye in the round of 128 en route to a win over Alexandra Victorsson of San Diego, 6-3, 6-1. She will now face off with USC's Gabi Desimone on Friday. Nguyen defeated Tara Panu of Pepperdine, 6-0, 6-1, in her first match of the day. Nguyen, however, was unable to get past Arizona's Kim Stubbe as she dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision, but she will now move on to play in the consolation bracket.
In other singles matches, Aguilar fell to Susan McRann of Arizona, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6, after a bye in the first round. Somoracz, meanwhile, was defeated by Anna Yang of Cal State Northridge, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 128. Both will now continue play in the consolation bracket.
Doubles action will start competition on Friday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT to be immediately followed by singles play.
