Women's Tennis Completes Day One at ITA West Regionals

SINGLES BRACKET | DOUBLES BRACKET SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team completed a successful first day at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships, as the co-hosts had four players advance to the round of 32 in the singles draw and also went 2-0 in doubles action. Three Aztecs had a pair of victories on Thursday as freshman Julia Trunk joined juniors Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov, in securing a spot in the round of 32. Senior Eliska Krausova also advanced in the bracket with a win following a first round bye. Trunk had a pair of solid performances as she dispatched Marie Tanaka of Hawai'i, 6-0, 6-0, before defeating UC Riverside's Erynne Oki, 7-5, 6-1. Cadua also had a good day as she cruised by Canna Furuta of Northridge, 6-2, 6-2, and Riverside's Angelique Corduz, 6-2, 6-3. In the bottom half of the bracket, Yusupov had a pair of 6-3, 6-1 victories over Julia Sandborn of Hawai'i and USD's Ellie Faulkner, while Krausova made the most of her only match of the day by taking a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Tania Rice of Pepperdine. Senior Sisse Nielsen and freshman Olivia Colman each opened the tournament with a first round victory, but then dropped their following matches, while junior Holly Bagshaw was unable to take advantage of a first round bye as she fell 6-2, 6-0, to Pavla Mesterova of LMU in the round of 64. In doubles action, Atalay and Yusupov defeated UCSB's Brittany Kausen and Bryanna Ojeda, 8-6, while Nielsen and Kitts downed Julia Sandborn and Marie Tanaka of Hawai'i, 8-3. Two other Aztec tandems (Bagshaw/Krausova and Cadua/Trunk) received a first round bye and will open doubles play in the round of 32 on Friday. The Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships will resume tomorrow morning with the doubles round of 32 beginning at 9 a.m., followed by the singles round of 32 at 10:30 a.m.
