Aztec Women's Tennis Concludes Action at SDSU Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team concluded its first fall tournament of the 2008-09 season as the SDSU Fall Classic came to a close at Aztec Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The three-day tournament featured individual competition and no team scoring with two groups of doubles and four groups of singles. In doubles action, senior Holly Bagshaw and sophomore Julia Trunk defeated Lindsey Howard and Denise Muresan of Michigan, 8-4. The senior duo of Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov were not as fortunate, however, as they saw their title run cut short in the Black Group, falling to another Wolverine tandem of Rika Tatsuno and Michelle Sulahian. Four Aztecs emerged victorious in singles play on the final day of the tournament. In the Black Group, Trunk outlasted Arizona's Danielle Steinberg, who is ranked No. 26 in the preseason ITA poll, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to claim the consolation championship, while Bagshaw downed Muresan, 6-4, 7-5. Yusupov, meanwhile, held on to defeat Marite Raygada of San Diego, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4), to win out the consolation bracket of the Blue Group. Rounding out the SDSU winners was freshman Sierra Ellison, who defeated USD's Milou Teeling, 7-5, 6-3.
SDSU will continue tournament play with the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego from Oct. 23-27.
