SDSU Women's Tennis Continues Play at Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team completed the second day of the SDSU Fall Classic at Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday. The three-day tournament features individual competition and no team scoring with two groups of doubles and four groups of singles. The Scarlet and Black started the day off on a high note, winning two of its three doubles matches. In the Black Group, seniors Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov combined for their second win of the season with an 8-2 triumph over Carla Tamborini and Ellie Faulkner of the University of San Diego. The Aztec duo will look to claim the title tomorrow when they close out the tournament against Michigan's Rika Tatsuno and Michelle Sulahian. Also in the Black Group was Roxanne and Sierra Ellison, who cruised to an 8-2 victory over Justine Perl and Marite Raygada of USD in a consolation match. Over in the Red Group, junior Holly Bagshaw and sophomore Julia Trunk's title run was cut short as they suffered a nail-biting 9-8(3) loss to Michigan's Whitney Taney and Tania Mahtani. The Aztecs, who won five of seven singles matches on Friday, were not as fortunate with only Yusupov and Trunk emerging victorious on the second day of the tournament. Trunk defeated USD's Maja Sujica, 6-3, 6-2 in the back draw of the Black Group, while Yusupov won her consolation match in the Blue Group against another Torero, Alexandra Demidova, 7-6, 6-2. After winning their first round matches, Cadua, Bagshaw, Olivia Colman and Roxanne Ellison were unable to advance to the finals in their respective brackets as all three fell in straight sets.
The SDSU Fall Classic will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 5, with doubles play starting at 9 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
