SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State women's tennis team opened its season on Friday and picked up seven victories on the first day of the SDSU Fall Classic I.
In doubles, the top Aztec team of Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison picked up where they left off at the end of the 2010 dual-match season as they cruised to an 8-1 victory over LMU's Ashley Anderson and Adrianna Radinovic. Julia Trunk and Alicia Aguilar experienced similar success as they posted an 8-3 win over Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and Nigora Sirojiddinova of Cal State Northridge.
Following doubles action, Trunk and Aguilar made it a perfect day after both claimed victories in singles. No. 51 Trunk went the distance in her match with Anderson and ultimately prevailed, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Aguilar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, meanwhile, had no problem with Sirojiddinova and won 6-1, 6-2. With the decision, Aguilar has now won eight straight matches dating back to last season.
Similar to Trunk, Julia Wais was extended to three sets in her outing vs. CSUN's Maria Pistalu. The sophomore dropped the first set, 4-6, but rebounded in the next two, 6-2, 6-3, to pick up her first win of the new year.
Emma Cioffi and Olivia Colman joined their teammates in the win column as well, both winning in straight sets. Cioffi went right through Radinovic, 6-1, 6-2, while Colman handled Miya Jin of LMU, 6-1, 7-6(4). Going back to last season, Colman has now won two straight matches.
