Sept. 29, 2006
SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State women's tennis team opened its 2006-07 campaign on Friday, completing the first day of action at the SDSU Fall Classic at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU recorded six victories on the day in three flights of singles matches to go along with a trio of wins in two flights of doubles. The Aztecs' season-opening tournament featured individual competition with no team scoring.
In Flight 1 singles action, Esther Cadua (San Diego, Calif.) overcame a one-set deficit in her opening-round match to defeat Denver's Kyla Iwinski, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. The Aztec sophomore experienced a reversal of fortune in the second round, however, falling to Lauren Macfarlane of Florida State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow classmate Holly Bagshaw was successful in her Aztec debut, recording a straight-set victory over Alabama's Shelley Godwin, 7-5, 6-2. The Potters Bar, England, product then raced to an early one-set lead in her afternoon match with Nicola Slater of Florida State, but eventually ran out of steam in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 defeat.
After dropping their first-round matches, senior Alesya Vidov (Moscow, Russia) and junior Eliska Krausova (Prague, Czech Republic) rebounded with victories in the consolation bracket. Vidov easily dispatched Camelia Todorova of Arizona, 6-1, 6-1, while Krausova prevailed in a tough three-set battle over Denver's Rachael Sackmaster, 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-5.
Over in Flight 2, freshman Ozge Atalay saw her first collegiate action for the scarlet and black. Despite falling in her opening match, the Istanbul, Turkey, native found the win column in the consolation round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alexandra Demidova of cross-town rival San Diego.
Senior Yuki Hagiwara (Nishinomiya City, Japan) was also victorious in her singles encounter in Flight 3. After receiving a first-round bye, Hagiwara stumbled in the first set in her second-round match against USD's Justine Perl, before recovering for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph.
In doubles competition, the tandem of Krausova and junior Sisse Nielsen (Alleroed, Denmark) cruised to an easy win in Flight 1 over the Arizona duo of Todorova and Tina Razloznik, 8-2. The Aztec pairing of Bagshaw and freshman Kathryn Kitts (Yardley, Pa.) was not as fortunate, suffering an 8-5 defeat at the hands of Florida State's Suzi Mansour and Ania Rynarzewska.
In Flight 2, meanwhile, the SDSU team of Cadua and sophomore Milana Yusupov (Holon, Israel) emerged triumphant over Paulina Bigos and Alice Tunaru of Alabama, 8-4. Hagiwara also saw doubles action for the Aztecs, joining forces with Florida State's Tapiwa Marobela to dispose of another Alabama duo, Bianca Svensson and Nicole Briceno, 8-4.
The SDSU Fall Classic resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Aztec Tennis Center with doubles matches, followed immediately by singles play.
