Aztecs Find Success on Day One of SDSU Fall Classic I

SAN DIEGO - 2012 SDSU Fall Classic I Brackets - Day One Seniors Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar defeated North Texas' Dane Joubert and Ilona Serchenko 8-6, to move on into the championship bracket. Fellow Aztecs, redshirt freshman Dora Somoracz and newcomer Tami Nguyen were 8-5 winners over Jodie Williams and Denise Van Der Ben of New Mexico State. Sophomore Laura Antonana Iriarte and freshman Michela Casanova couldn't get past Laura Claus and Marta Stojanovic of USD, falling 8-3, to the Torero duo. San Diego State's nationally ranked singles player, Wais, made it a perfect day after recording a win in the red draw of the singles bracket. No. 90 Wais won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in her matchup with Ginet Pinero of New Mexico State. Aguilar followed suit in the black bracket by downing Annemieke Witte of New Mexico State, 7-6, 6-1. Casanova made a solid singles collegiate debut as she dismissed Sabrina Man-Son-Hing of Cal State Northridge in the black draw, 6-1, 6-4. Also making her first mark as an Aztec in singles, Nguyen defeated Corinne Schnyder of Cal State Northridge, 6-0, 6-3. SDSU veterans, Somoracz and Kristin Buth were both victorious in singles action. In the white draw, Somoracz fought to take down Valenzuela in a closely contested match, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5). In the grey bracket, Buth downed Victoria Parshikova of North Texas, 6-1, 6-3. Antonana Iriarte was the only Aztec unable to record a singles win on Friday, falling to Keseniya Barbadush of North Texas, 6-2, 6-3, in the red draw. Day two of the SDSU Fall Classic I is set for Saturday at 9 a.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center. Doubles will start the day off and will be followed by singles action.
