W. Tennis Advance Four On First Day of Fall Classic I

The San Diego State women's tennis team saw four Aztecs advance to the winner's brackets after the conclusion of day one of the SDSU Fall Classic I. Three of the four student-athletes that are moving on in the tournament are in their first year of competition on The Mesa. The annual event opened the fall campaign for the Aztecs on Friday morning at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The first official action of the 2013-14 season got underway with doubles play. In the red doubles draw, Kristin Buth and Hailey Johnson received a bye and will face Anna Depenau and Janine Koleta of San Diego tomorrow morning. Also receiving a bye on Friday was Kennedy Davis and Laura Antonana Iriarte in the black bracket. The Aztec duo will take on Janaki Gunuganti and Frederique Van de Velde of Grand Canyon University first thing tomorrow. The only SDSU pair to see doubles action came in the white draw. Tami Nguyen and Olivia Larsson came up short to Alexandra Petrzalkova and Taylor Young of Grand Canyon.
San Diego State's lone senior, Antonana Iriarte, made a statement with her first singles match of her final year on Montezuma Mesa. The San Sebastian, Spain, native battled Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai of Pepperdine in the red bracket, taking the match to three sets. Antonana Iriarte could not close out the bout, ultimately falling, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6.
The white singles bracket saw double success for SDSU. Freshman Kennedy Davis made her Aztec debut with a victory over Annemieke Witte of New Mexico State, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-4. Also notching a win in her debut was Hailey Johnson as she topped Elanor Grossman of Loyola Marymount, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3.
Dora Somoracz was unable to get past Janaki Gunuganti of Grand Canyon, falling, 6-2, 6-2, in the gold singles draw. The silver singles bracket saw another first-year Aztec adding to the win column as Olivia Larsson defeated Anastasia Koveshnikova of Loyola Marymount, 6-1, 6-0.
Action will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with doubles play. Singles competition will immediately follow.
