SAN DIEGO - The third-seeded San Diego State women's tennis team clinched its fifth trip to the finals of the Mountain West Championship with a 4-1 victory against No. 48 UNLV on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. With the win, SDSU improves to 12-13 on the season, while the Rebels drop to 16-10.
In doubles play, the Aztecs jumped out to a good start with wins at number two and three. Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana Iriarte picked up a victory first as they defeated Ella Bourchier and Anett Bako by the score of 8-2. Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar then defeated Aleksandr Josifoska and Manon De Lanlay by an 8-1 margin to clinch the point and give SDSU a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs used their momentum from doubles in singles as they won the first set in four of the six matches. At number four, Alicia Aguilar was first to finish as she earned a 6-2, 6-4 win against Manon De Lanlay. Sierra Ellison was next with a win as she defeated Ella Bourchier, 6-3, 6-3, at number five.
After No. 113 Aleksandr Josifoska of UNLV earned a straight-set win, SDSU clinched the 4-1 win and a berth in the championship match when Laura Antonana Iriarte earned a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory against Nives Pavlovic at number three singles.
The Scarlet and Black is now set to face top-seeded TCU in the MW Championship at 2 p.m. PT at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU last won the title in 2003, when it defeated Brigham Young by the score of 4-1.
