Aztec Women's Tennis Beats USD On Senior Day, 5-2

April 19, 2006

SAN DIEGO - The 32nd-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team defeated city-rival and No. 56 San Diego, 5-2, on Senior Day, Wednesday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. Prior to the match, the Aztecs honored its lone senior in Dita Hauerlandova as well as the Toreros' three seniors. The win improves SDSU's record to 16-7 overall, while USD falls to 9-6.

The Aztecs jumped out of the gates early as Dita Hauerlandova and Sisse Nielsen cruised to an 8-1 victory over San Diego's No. 44 ranked doubles team in Emma Murphy and Lauren Perl at No. 1. The victory was the duo's second in their last three tries against teams that hold a national ranking. Their win, coupled with the fact that the Toreros defaulted their match at No. 3, gave the Aztecs the doubles point after just one match. On court No. 2, Alesya Vidov and Eliska Krausova improved to 8-3 on the season as they recorded an 8-4 victory to complete the sweep.

SDSU increased its lead once singles play started as it received a pair of wins right off the bat. Esther Cadua posted a straight set, 6-2, 6-1, win over Zoe Taylor at No. 6, snapping a four-match losing streak, while Milana Yusupov beat Helene Lindstrand, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4.

San Diego got on the scoreboard and cut into the Aztec lead when No. 43 Murphy defeated 84th-ranked Hauerlandova, 6-0, 7-5, at the top singles position. But with three matches still in progress, Krausova put an end to USD's comeback effort as she posted her 15th win of the spring with a three-set performance over Perl at third singles.

With the outcome already decided, the Toreros' Jennifer Brown earned USD's second team point with her win over Vidov at No. 2, while Nielsen emerged victorious at No. 5 giving the match its final score.

The Aztecs will be in action next Thursday, April 27, at the Mountain West Conference Championships held at Barnes Tennis Center. As the tournament's No. 4 seed, SDSU will face fifth-seeded New Mexico at 2 p.m. PDT.
