April 19, 2005
SAN DIEGO - No. 43 San Diego State closed out the 2005 regular season with a 4-3 victory over cross-town rival San Diego Tuesday afternoon at USD West Tennis Courts. The victory is the Aztecs' second straight and improves their record to 15-9 going into next week's Mountain West Conference Championships.
SDSU set the tone early by winning all three doubles matches. Indra Erichsen and Nina Spaeth pulled out a 9-8 victory over Emma Murphy and Lauren Perl at the top spot. The win is the pair's sixth consecutive and gives them a record of 8-1 at No. 1.
Following their lead at No. 2 was the Aztec team of Dita Hauerlandova-Alesya Vidov. The two used an 8-5 performance to dispose of Lauren Kazarian and Helene Lindstrand, while the Sisse Nielsen and Eliska Krausova posted an 8-6 win at No. 3.
In singles, Erichsen was the first off the court when Tara Livesay retired with the Aztec senior up 5-0 in the first set. At No. 1, 30th-ranked Emma Murphy defeated Vidov, 6-0, 6-0, to get the Toreros on the scoreboard.
With SDSU holding a 2-1 lead, Nielsen breezed through her match with Jenna Anderson at No. 6, defeating her by a score of 6-0, 6-1. USD cut its deficit to 3-2, when Perl downed SDSU freshman Krausova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
With two matches in progress and the Aztecs needing only one point to clinch the victory, Spaeth downed San Diego's Lindstrand, 7-6, 6-0, to give SDSU its 15th win of the season.
SDSU is now 22-12 all-time against San Diego and is the first time since the 2002 season that both the men and women defeated the Toreros in the same year. Earlier this season, the men, ranked No. 41 at the time, upset 26th-ranked USD, 5-2.
