April 18, 2003
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Lindsey Hedberg broke the serve of 44th-ranked Courtney Nagle in the final game of the third set to lead the 25th-ranked Aztecs to a 4-3 victory over 38th-ranked Oregon on Friday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.
Hedberg rallied from one-set down to claim a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory at number two singles to lead the Aztecs to victory in the final regular-season home game of the season. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 19-5, giving SDSU its highest victory total since the 1985 squad finished with a 26-8 record.
The Aztecs got three victories over ranked opponents in claiming their 14th victory in 16 matches. In addition to Hedberg's victory at number two, senior Silvia Tornier posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over 17th-ranked Daria Panova. In a battle of ranked doubles teams, the Aztec duo of Tornier and Indra Erichsen defeated 28th-ranked Courtney Nagle and Daria Panova, 8-5.
The Aztecs never trailed in the match but also never enjoyed a lead of more than one point. After winning the doubles point, the Ducks tied the match with Ester Bak posting a straight-set victory at number six singles.
San Diego State took a lead with Tornier losing just three games in knocking off 17th-ranked Panova. Oregon knotted the match at two, when Jamie Marshall won 7-5, 6-2 over Katja Karrento, 7-5, 6-2, at number four.
The Aztecs went up 3-2 when Katalina Romero was victorious at number three singles. Romero defeated Monika Gieczys, 6-3, 6-2 before the Ducks tied the match with Julie Merle winning 6-2, 7-6 over Patricia Graf at number five singles.
That set the stage for Hedberg's heroics at number two singles.
San Diego State will host Wyoming on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the 2003 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday. Match time at the SDSU Courts is set for 2 p.m.
