SDSU Women's Tennis Completes Perfect Weekend by Sweeping Colorado State
April 13, 2008
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team blanked Colorado State, 7-0, in its final regular season Mountain West Conference match on Sunday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The Scarlet and Black picked up its third straight win, improving to 10-12 overall and 3-5 in the MWC, while the Rams fall to 6-10 overall and 0-6 in league action.
Once again setting the tone for SDSU were Esther Cadua and Kathryn Kitts, who shut down Sarah Seltsam and Kirsten Stople, 8-0, at the No. 3 spot. The Aztec duo gave the Scarlet and Black the early advantage in doubles play in all three matches this weekend.
CSU eventually evened the playing field when Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen pulled out an 8-2 victory over Sisse Nielsen and Milana Yusupov on court two. All eyes then turned to the match at the top of the ladder, where Eliska Krausova and Julia Trunk held a somewhat comfortable lead over Hilary Tyler and Lauren Strasburger. Despite a late rally by the Rams, Krausova/Trunk were able to finish strong with an 8-6 win, clinching the point for the Aztecs.
Krausova carried the momentum from her doubles match into singles play as she was the first off the courts with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Strasburger at No. 3. Nielsen and Yusupov then turned away their adversaries by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores, with Yusupov's win securing the victory for SDSU.
With the match already decided, Trunk prevailed over Neal, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 2 position before Cadua finished off Pohjalainen in straight sets on court four. Cadua, who has a team-leading 22 victories, finished the season with an impressive 7-1 MWC dual-match record. Holly Bagshaw completed the sweep and a successful weekend for the Aztecs with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tyler at the top spot.
San Diego State closes out its regular season on Tuesday, April 15, when the University of San Diego pays a visit to the Aztec Tennis Center. The Scarlet and Black will honor its two seniors, Krausova and Nielsen, before the 4 p.m. (PDT) match.
