SDSU Women's Tennis Unable to Overcome No. 58 UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The San Diego State women's tennis team was unable to come out of a grueling three-match weekend with a win as it fell to No. 58 UNLV, 5-2, Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Aztecs, who have now faced a ranked Mountain West Conference opponent in its last five outings dropped to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in league play, while the Lady Rebels improved to 11-8 overall and 3-2 in the MWC.
UNLV came out of the gates firing, making quick work of the Scarlet and Black in doubles action. The 48th-ranked duo of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva set the tone by handing Eliska Krausova and Kathryn Kitts an 8-2 loss at the top of the ladder. Soon after that match ended, Sharon Marin and Alisa Razina clinched the point for the Rebels with an 8-1 defeat of Holly Bagshaw and Sisse Nielsen on court two.
SDSU was unable to overcome the early deficit, falling in its first three singles contests. Battling against a ranked opponent for the fifth consecutive match, Bagshaw suffered a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at the hands of No. 35 Gantcheva. Krausova saw similar fortunes, falling in straight sets to Nikol Dimitrova at No. 3.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Trunk put up a solid fight against Nedeltcheva, but the Lady Rebel emerged victorious with a narrow 7-6 triumph, securing the match for UNLV.
With the match already decided, Nielsen picked up the Aztecs' first point of the day by downing Marin, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 6 slot. Yusupov was also a winner for San Diego State, earning her second straight victory at the No. 5 position with a 6-4, 7-6 triumph over Williams.
In the last match to finish, Cadua saw her seven-game winning streak snapped in a heartbreaking 7-6, 6-7, 10-7 loss to Maskaljun.
San Diego State will return to the friendly confines of the Aztec Tennis Center when it continues MWC play by hosting Air Force, Wyoming and Colorado State. SDSU will open the three-match weekend with a 2 p.m. (PDT) showdown against Air Force on Friday, April 11.
