Aztec Women's Tennis Downs Harvard, 6-1, in Final Tune-up Before MWC Opener
March 25, 2008
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team earned its way back into the win column with a convincing 6-1 victory over Harvard at the Aztec Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Scarlet and Black swept through doubles play and then won five singles matches to improve to 7-7 on the season.
SDSU saw some changes in its doubles teams, but it did not affect the Aztecs play on the court as they won all three matches. Sisse Nielsen and Eliska Krausova, who were playing together for the first time this season, blanked Stephanie Schnitter and Laura Peterzan, 8-0, at the top of the ladder. Kathryn Kitts and Julia Trunk, also forming a new partnership, saw similar results as they clinched the point for the Scarlet and Black with an 8-3 triumph over Samantha Rosekrans and Beier Ko at No. 2. Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov completed the sweep with a hard fought 8-7 (8) victory.
In singles action, Krausova was the first off the courts with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Rosekrans, giving the Aztecs a 2-0 lead. Ko closed the gap as she handed Bagshaw a 6-3, 6-1 loss at the top spot, but Trunk then downed Peterzan, 6-4, 7-5, right before Nielsen claimed a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Curto on court six to clinch the win for the Scarlet and Black.
Yusupov continued the Aztecs' good fortunes with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five and Cadua closed out the match on a high note as she fought back from a one-set deficit to claim a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 victory over Schnitter at No. 4.
San Diego State will look to carry its momentum into this weekend as they begin Mountain West Conference action in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs will open their conference slate with a neutral-site clash against No. 63 Utah, Friday at 11 a.m. (PDT), and will then take on host and 37th-ranked Brigham Young, Saturday at 9 a.m. (PDT).
