San Diego State Women's Tennis Falls to No. 30 Wake Forest, 5-2
March 13, 2008
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team was unable to recover from an early 3-0 deficit, as it dropped a 5-2 decision to 30th-ranked Wake Forest on Thursday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The Demon Deacons (6-5) swept through doubles play before winning four singles contests to claim the match. With the loss, the Scarlet and Black falls to 6-7 on the season.
Playing together for the first time in over a month, Esther Cadua and Julia Trunk couldn't seem to find their rhythm, falling by an 8-3 count to Christian Tara and Aileen Davis at No. 3. Wake Forest then captured the doubles point on court two, as Alex Hirsch and Emilee Malvehy defeated Holly Bagshaw and Eliska Krausova, 8-4, handing the Aztec duo their first loss in five outings. Rounding out doubles play, Kathryn Kitts and Sisse Nielsen put up a fight at the top of the ladder, but came out on the short end of an 8-6 score against Sasha Kulikova and Ana Jerman.
The Deacons went on to take a 3-0 lead early on in singles action as Davis handed Ozge Atalay a straight-set loss, before Krausova fell to Kulikova, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot. Bagshaw kept SDSU's hopes alive as she fought through an injury to claim a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hirsch at the top spot. But Wake Forest shot down any notion of an Aztec comeback when Katarina Reveche clinched the win by defeating Nielsen, 6-2, 6-4 on court five.
With the match already decided, Esther Cadua tacked on one more point for the Scarlet and Black with a 6-3, 2-6, 3-2 ret., triumph over Malvehy.
San Diego State will take a week off before returning to action on Tuesday, March 25, when it hosts Harvard in a 2 p.m. PT showdown at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU will then open Mountain West Conference play later in the week (March 28-29) by traveling to Provo, Utah, to take on both Utah and BYU.
