March 5, 2010
BERKELEY, Calif. - The San Diego State women's tennis team beat the rain and got its match in with fifth-ranked California, only to be defeated, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The loss drops the Aztecs to 5-5 this season, while the Golden Bears improve to 9-2.
SDSU dropped the doubles point to start the match as Cal swept all three matches beginning with Emma Cioffi and Alicia Aguilar's 8-2 loss at No. 3. The Bears clinched the point later in the afternoon when No. 13 Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova were 8-2 winners over Roxanne and Sierra Ellison. Then with the point already in favor of the home team, 38th-ranked Marina Cossou and Kasia Siwosz made it 3-for-3 for the Bears with their 8-4 victory over Julia Trunk and Julia Wais.
In singles it was more of the same unfortunately for SDSU as it lost all six matches. No. 56 Mari Andersson was the first off the court for Cal after defeating Sierra Ellison in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Then 17th-ranked Marina Cossou dropped No. 71 Aguilar, 6-2, 6-3, putting the Golden Bears within one team point of the win.
At No. 6, Olivia Colman could not hold off Stephany Chang and the Aztec junior fell, 6-2, 6-2, to give Cal the necessary four points for the victory. After that, Roxanne Ellison overcame a rough 6-0 first-set loss to Tayler Davis and pushed her counterpart to the edge, but fell just short of forcing a third set when she was downed 7-6 in the second.
Wais, at No. 4, put up a strong effort in her match with Kasia Siwosz, but ultimately fell, 7-6, 7-5. Wais' doubles partner, No. 65 Trunk, also recorded a strong performance, but she, too, suffered the same fate, losing to second-ranked Jana Juricova, 6-3, 7-5.
San Diego State is next in action on Wednesday, March 10, when it plays host to Loyola Marymount at Aztec Tennis Center. The dual match is set for 2 p.m. PT.
