March 2, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. - The 51st-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to No. 52 Arizona at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs captured the doubles point before the Wildcats came from behind to win four singles matches for the victory.
In a fairly new partnership, Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov seem to have found their groove, as the duo downed Jane Huh and Ariane Masschelein, 8-3, to win their third-straight match together. Holly Bagshaw and Eliska Krausova then clinched the doubles point for SDSU at the No. 2 position with an 8-4 triumph over Natalia Toporowska and Katie Orletsky. The Aztec tandem has also won three consecutive contests and improved to 9-6 overall.
With the point already decided, the Wildcats picked up their first victory of the day as Claire Reitsch and Danielle Steinberg claimed an 8-7(3) decision over Kathryn Kitts and Sisse Nielsen in the No. 1 slot.
Arizona quickly tied the match at 1-1 as Toporowska handed Cadua a 6-4, 6-2 loss on court three, but Yusupov regained the lead for the Aztecs by defeating Huh, 6-2, 6-4. The Wildcats then went on to take the next three singles matches for the win. Colman fell in straight sets at No. 6 and Krausova dropped a close 7-5, 7-6(5) decision before Arizona's 60th-ranked Steinberg clinched the victory with a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 triumph over Bagshaw in the No. 1 slot. Nielsen was able to give the Aztecs one more point by edging Masschelein, 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-8.
San Diego State will return to the Aztec Tennis Center later this week when it hosts 61st-ranked University of Pennsylvania, Saturday, March 8, at noon PT.
