Feb. 27, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. - The 51st-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team took an early 1-0 lead, but was unable to put No. 35 UC Irvine away, as the Aztecs fell 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium. SDSU claimed the doubles point before UCI went on to take the match by winning five-of-six singles contests.
In doubles action, Holly Bagshaw and Eliska Krausova won their second straight match together, as they were the first off the court after downing Inna Agababian and Jessica Broadfoot, 8-4, in the No. 1 slot. UCI evened the playing field when Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin defeated Kathryn Kitts and Sisse Nielsen by an identical score. All eyes then turned to court three, where Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov emerged victorious over Lisa Shih and Brooke Bartlett by an 8-6 count to clinch the point.
UC Irvine then took a 3-1 lead in singles play after winning the first three matches. Yusupov and Olivia Colman both fell in straight sets, while Cadua saw her one-set lead slip away, falling 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Fermin on court three.
Bagshaw then pulled the Aztecs back within one point by coming from behind to defeat Bernhard at the No. 1 position (4-6, 6-3, 6-2), but the Anteaters went on to clinch the match, as Nielsen was unable to complete her own comeback, dropping a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 decision to Bartlett on court five. Krausova also suffered a three-set loss at the No. 2 spot.
San Diego State will return to the courts, Sunday, March, 2, when it heads to Tucson, Ariz., for a 9 a.m. PT showdown with the 52nd-ranked Arizona Wildcats.
