Feb. 12, 2004
SAN DIEGO -- Pepperdine's Eva Dickes won a thrilling three-set match at number five singles to lift the 43rd-ranked Waves to a 4-3 victory over 29th-ranked San Diego State on Thursday afternoon at SDSU Courts.
It was the first loss of the season in four matches for the Aztecs.
"It was a great college tennis match against a great Pepperdine," SDSU head coach Peter Mattera said. "This is the best match we have played this season and we took a big step forward. I am proud of our effort."
San Diego State scored first by winning the doubles point. The Aztecs 36th-ranked duo of Katalina Romero and Indra Erichsen recorded an 8-6 victory at number one doubles. After losing number three doubles, Dita Hauerlandova and Alesya Vidov rallied from a 5-2 deficit to claim an 8-6 win to give SDSU a 1-0 lead.
"Alesya helped us secure the doubles point by combining with Dita for a come-from-behind victory," Mattera said. "She played a very good singles match to tie the score at three."
Pepperdine tied the score at one with a victory at number six singles before Erichsen posted a straight-set win at number three to put the Aztecs up 2-1. The Waves took the lead with victories at the top two positions. At number one, 67th-ranked Natalie Braverman defeated Hauerlandova, 7-6, 6-4, while Charlotte Vernaz upended Romero, 7-6, 6-3.
Vidov tied the team score at three, with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory at number four singles. That made the number five singles match the deciding match, with the Waves' Dickes claiming a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win.
