No. 48 Aztecs Claim 4-3 Victory Over Hawai'i
Feb. 11, 2010
SAN DIEGO - The 48th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team won the doubles point and carried the momentum into singles play to defeat Hawai'i, 4-3, at Aztec Tennis Center Thursday afternoon. With the decision, SDSU improves to 4-2, while the Rainbow Wahine fall to 1-5 on the year.
For the fifth time in six matches this season, the Aztecs emerged from doubles play with the point after winning at Nos. 2 and 3. Alicia Aguilar and Emma Cioffi made quick work of their counterparts and pocketed an 8-3 victory, but Hawai'i's top duo evened the score with their triumph at No. 1. Then with the doubles point on the line, Julia Wais and Julia Trunk pulled through with the 8-6 win giving the Aztecs the early lead.
Singles play is where the match became interesting. The Rainbow Wahine tied the match at 1-1 when Alyssa Nafarrete downed Olivia Colman, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 6, but Aguilar posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Natasha Zorec at No. 4 to take the lead back for the Aztecs. Aguilar's performance netted her third straight win and improved her dual-match record to 5-1.
Hawai'i, which is coached by former SDSU men's tennis great Jun Hernandez, answered back with a Sophie Kobuch victory at No. 2 to knot the match once again, this time at 2 apiece.
San Diego State, however, would not be denied on this chilly afternoon as Sierra Ellison outlasted Aglae Van den Bergh in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and Julia Trunk provided the clinching win with her 1-6, 6-4, 4-0 ret., effort over Barbara Pinterova at No. 1.
The Aztecs continue their non-conference schedule on Saturday afternoon when they take on No. 52 Long Beach State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
