SAN DIEGO - In what would turn out to be a battle in singles action, the San Diego State women's tennis team was able to upset No. 40 Saint Mary's on Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center, 4-3. The Aztecs downed the Gaels to move to 3-1 on the season.
Doubles play would be an indication of what was to come as the two teams split the first two matches. In second doubles, Catherine Isip and Elizabeth Searl got past Dora Somoracz and Laura Antonana Iriarte, 8-2. In third doubles, Kristin Buth and Michela Casanova put SDSU on the board as the duo downed Catherine Leduc and Danielle Flores, 8-4. Saint Mary's would clinch the doubles point in on court No. 1 with Jade Frampton and Jenny Jullien defeating Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar, 8-4.
San Diego State would come out swinging in singles play as the Aztecs took the first two matches. In sixth singles, Casanova handily beat Audrey Leitz, 6-3, 6-2. Also picking up a win for SDSU was freshman Tami Nguyen as she rallied to defeat Frampton, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2. In fifth singles, Buth was unable to notch a second victory on the day, falling to Leduc, 6-4, 6-4. The Aztecs would prove to be resilient as Antonana Iriarte and Aguilar battled in their respective matches to clinch the victory. On court No. 3, Antonana Iriarte fought back from an early deficit to claim the win over Flores, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. In second singles, Aguilar also battled her Gael opponent to come away with the win, downing Isip, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. In the final match to finish of the day, a highly contested bout would take place between Wais and the 64th ranked singles player in the nation, Jullien. The two would leave it on all on the court, fighting for each point, with Jullien ultimately coming out on top, 7-6, 6-7, 10-3.
SDSU will next face No. 28 Arizona on Feb. 8 at 2 pm PT at Aztec Tennis Center.
