Aztec Women's Tennis Falls to UC Irvine, 7-0
Feb. 3, 2007
HONOLULU - The 35th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team wrapped up its first road trip of the season on a sour note, dropping a 7-0 decision on Saturday to No. 55 UC Irvine at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex. With the defeat, the Aztecs fall to 3-2 on the year, while the Anteaters improve to 5-1 after capturing their third-straight victory.
SDSU was unable to generate any momentum in the early going as UCI claimed all three matches in doubles action. The Aztecs' No. 3 pairing of Kathryn Kitts and Sisse Nielsen fell to the Anteater tandem of Ali Borowicz and Jayme Hu, 8-4, while the team of Alesya Vidov and Ozge Atalay experienced an identical fate in the No. 2 slot against UCI's Jessica Broadfoot and Heidi Kaloi. Over on the No. 1 court, Holly Bagshaw and Eliska Krausova could not prevent an Anteater sweep as the Aztec duo fell to Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin, 8-6.
Singles play proved to be equally frustrating for SDSU, which tasted defeat in all six contests. First off the court was Atalay, who suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback at the hands of Broadfoot in the No. 5 position. Esther Cadua also found rough waters in her match with Fermin in the No. 3 slot, losing in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Leading 3-0, the Anteaters clinched the match on the No. 6 court where Borowicz pinned a 6-2, 6-1 defeat on sophomore Milana Yusupov, who made her first appearance for the Scarlet and Black in 2007 after battling a wrist injury during the fall tournament season. UC Irvine then notched three additional victories to complete the shutout.
SDSU will return home for a pair of matches next week when it plays host to No. 51 LSU on Wednesday, Feb. 7, followed by a clash with 49th-ranked Arizona two days later on Friday, Feb. 9. Both contests are slated for a 2 p.m. start at Aztec Tennis Center.
