San Diego State Travels To The Nation's 50th State For Dual-Meet Against Hawai'i
Jan. 18, 2005 SAN DIEGO - SDSU Swimming and Diving Weekly Release
San Diego State Travels To The Nation's 50th State For Dual-Meet Against Hawai'i SDSU will be looking to get back into the win column for the first time since a 172-128 road triumph at Northern Colorado on Nov. 19. This season, the Aztecs are 1-3 in meets away from America's Finest City. From this point forward, the schedule does not get much easier with two more road dates (at LMU/Pepperdine; at Northern Arizona) scheduled before the MWC Championships take place at the end of February.
Weekly Recap * On Jan. 8-9, the Aztecs competed in the 25th Annual UCI/Ayres Hotel & Suites Invitational held on the campus of UC Irvine. The Aztecs, defending Sprints Meet champions, fell a bit short, finishing sixth with 80 points. For the meet, nine personal, season-best times were established. Junior Emily Schmied set personal, season-highs in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.00) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.74). In the 200-yard individual medley, the junior finished in fifth with a time of 2:11.65, the third-fastest time of the season. In the Distance Meet, SDSU faired much better with a third place finish (72 pts.). The meet was highlighted by sophomore Caitlin Friedhoff's 500-yard freestyle win. Friedhoff swam a 4:57.34 in the win, both career and season highs, in an event in which four other Aztecs placed in the top-20. Freshman Adrienne Conte came in 10th with a time of 5:18.38, followed by sophomores Emily Parker (12th, 5:19.30) and Stella Karoly (16th, 5:24.33). Despite adverse weather conditions, the Aztecs tallied 164 points to finish fifth in the Relay Meet. The SDSU `A' team swam a season-high time of 1:52.07 in the 200-yard medley relay to finish fifth. San Diego State's best effort was a fourth-place showing in the 300-yard butterfly relay. The SDSU `A' team finished the relay with a time of 3:04.57. On the day, a total of 11 SDSU squads finished in the top-10 of 10 different relays. The San Diego State divers were also in action as the three-meter competition took place the first day. Both freshmen divers, Joelle Felton and Kathleen Heuring set career highs and made the cut after six dives. Felton finished in sixth place with a score of 377.10 and Heuring tallied 359.15 points good for 10th place. Felton's score was the highest for an Aztec diver this season since Heuring set the mark at the UNLV Winter Invitational (Dec. 18) with a score of 336.90. In the one-meter diving event, both SDSU divers made the cut after six dives. Felton notched a total of 463.30 points to finish in fourth place and Heuring finished ninth with a 12-dive total of 437.90 points.
