SDSU Swimming and Diving Downs San Diego, 187-101

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team won nine of its first 10 events en route to a 187-101 victory over San Diego at the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center on Saturday. The Aztecs, who finished with 12 first-place finishes on the day, improved their overall record to 6-8, while the Toreros fell to 2-8. Five Aztecs - juniors Kimberlee Frith, Stella Karoly and Emily Parker, and sophomores Joelle Felton and Katie Smith - won two individual events apiece. Frith was victorious in the 50 (24.90) and 200 freestyle (1:54.91) events, Karoly took first in the 100 (59.36) and 200 butterfly (2:09.27), and Parker won the 500 (5:11.61) and 1,000 free (10:30.40). Felton set a season-best mark in 1-meter diving with 246.45 points after winning the 3-meter (239.77) event earlier in the afternoon, while Smith raced to first-place finishes in the 100 (58.98) and 200 (2:08.11) backstroke. Senior Emily Schmied took first in the 100 free (54.19) and was second to Karoly in the 200 fly (2:10.41) for the Aztecs, while freshmen Megan Flanagan (1-meter - 245.85 and 3-meter diving - 237.45) and Rosalie Raymond (500 - 5:16.18 and 1,000 free - 10:45.68) each picked up a pair of runner up finishes. The quartet of Smith, sophomore Lindsay Hnyda, Karoly and senior Samantha Peters won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:51.39 for SDSU.
The Aztecs will have three weeks off from competition before they compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships from Feb. 22-25 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
