Jan. 29, 2011
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The San Diego State swimming & diving team improved to 18-0 on the season after picking up dual meet victories against Hawai'i (152-144) and UC San Diego (207-86) Saturday afternoon at UCSD's Canyonview Aquatics Center. The meet also included swimmers from the University of Wyoming although SDSU did not score against the Cowgirls after defeating them the previous day.
The wins continues the Aztecs' streak of 21 straight dual meet victories dating back to last season and runs their string of non-conference wins to 38.
SDSU swimmers captured first in a total of eight events and one relay as they set one relay and six individual pool records along the way. The first came in the leadoff event where the 200 medley relay team of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Brooke Vessey and Emilee Jennings went 1:44.91 to break the previous facility mark by over two seconds. The Jennings sisters would set facility marks in individual events over the course of the meet as well.
Sophomore Melanie Garibaldi then set a pool record with a first-place time of 10:11.71 in the 1000 freestyle. That was followed by Kelly Marquenie's pool record in the 200 free (1:51.99). It was the first of two Canyonview Aquatics Center records on the day for the Aztec freshman as she also captured the 500 free with a time of 4:56.55.
Leona Jennings added a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke with marks of 56.34 and 2:03.05 respectively with the former going into the record book as the top time for the facility. Emilee Jennings added her name to the facilty rcord book by winning the 100 butterfly in 57.20.
The sixth pool record that fell to the Aztecs was in the 100 free where Stephanie Koch picked up the win with a time of 51.21. Freshman Berklie Oscarson was SDSU's seventh individual event victor as she won the 200 butterfly in 2:06.49.
In the final event of the meet, the Jennings sisters, Koch and Kim Bierwith combined to turn in the fourth-fastest-time in SDSU history (1:35.12) in the 200 freestyle relay.
