FORT WORTH, Texas - The San Diego State swimming and diving team recorded a win and a loss in a double dual meet held at the TCU Recreation Center pool Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs defeated Centenary, 80-58, but dropped an 88-55 decision to Mountain West Conference foe TCU.
SDSU's season record now stands at 6-5 overall and 2-5 in the MWC. TCU, which also recorded an 80-51 victory over Centenary, improved to 6-3-1 (3-3-1 MWC) while Centenary fell to 4-3.
Freshman Jeanette Engzell gave the Aztecs their only two individual event wins of the day, finishing first in both the 100 (1:05.34) and 200 (2:21.21) breaststroke. She also swam a leg on the 200 medley relay squad that opened the meet with a second-place finish.
Junior diver Alex Barstad finished second in both diving events while establishing season personal and team bests. She scored 267.89 in the one-meter and 265.34 in the three-meter, besting her previous high point totals in those events by 23 and 27 points respectively. Her mark in the one-meter ranks as the second-highest score by an individual in SDSU history.
Elsewhere, freshman Elisabeth Krueger turned in a trio of runner-up finishes during which she turned in a pair of personal season-bet times. Those came in the 200 butterfly (2:06.06) and 200 individual medley (2:09.25). She also went 58.10 in the 100 fly and swam a leg in the 200 medley relay that finished second as well.
Two other Aztecs came in second in a pair of events as well. Bojana Duric was runner-up in both the 500 (5:13.94) and 1000 (10:32.73) freestyle while teammate Shaida Solimani was second in the 100 (59.45) and 200 (2:08.12) backstroke.
SDSU will now have a week off from competition as it prepares to host a triple dual meet with Wyoming, Northern Colorado and UC San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Aztec Aquatic Center beginning at 1:00 p.m. (PST). The Aztecs divers will be competing at the Air Force Diving Invitational that same weekend in Colorado Springs. Colo.
