The San Diego State softball team begins its quest for a national championship this weekend when it travels to the campus of Fresno State to compete in the NCAA Fresno Regional. The Aztecs (43-15) earned the No. 2 seed in the double-elimination regional and will face third-seeded California (40-24) at 5 p.m. PT Friday. The host Bulldogs (51-11) earned the No. 16 overall seed and will face Sacramento State (32-19) in the other region's pairing at approximately 7:30 p.m.

SDSU clinched the automatic bid to the tournament, its fourth trip in eight seasons, after claiming a pair of shutouts (9-0 and 6-0) at UNLV over the weekend to win its fourth Mountain West Conference title. With program-bests in overall winning percentage (.741), victories (43) and road winning percentage (.750), the Aztecs are heading into the tournament on a six-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents, 23-4, over the stretch.

This year's national tournament features 64 teams, with four teams participating at 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. The regional winners will advance to super regional competition for a best-of-three series from May 23-24 (Memorial Day Weekend) at eight campus sites. The remaining eight teams will advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The championship final will be a best-of-three-series. The WCWS will be conducted May 29-June 4 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
